In many scenarios, users need to include additional PDF documents\u2014such as engineering drawings, specifications, or supporting attachments\u2014directly with SAP-generated output.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this blog, we walk through an ABAP-based approach for attaching external PDFs to output generated from SAPscript, Smart Forms, and Adobe Forms. The objective is to standardize each source as PDF data, merge the documents, and deliver one complete output to end users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-high-level-approach\">The High-Level Approach<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of the form technology used to produce the original output, the merge process follows the same six logical stages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Get OTF data from the form<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Convert OTF to PDF<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add the PDF Content to the Merge Sequence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get the external PDF (also as XSTRING)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Merge both PDFs together<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Send or store the final merged PDF<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Each SAP form technology produces output differently. SAPscript and Smart Forms generate OTF, while Adobe Forms generate PDF directly through Adobe Document Services. Getting OTF from each form type<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SAPscript :<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To enable PDF merging and spool processing, set the SAPscript output interface parameter <strong>TDGETOTF<\/strong> to <strong>&#8216;X&#8217;<\/strong>. This is done by setting <strong>PRINT_OPTS-TDGETOTF = &#8216;X&#8217;<\/strong> before calling <strong>OPEN_FORM<\/strong>, so the form output is generated as OTF data instead of being sent directly to the printer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After form processing is complete, retrieve the generated OTF data from <strong>CLOSE_FORM<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>CALL FUNCTION 'CLOSE_FORM'\n  IMPORTING\n    result  = pr_result\n  \" Get OTF Data\n  TABLES\n    otfdata = gt_otf_data.\n<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SmartForms:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Smart Forms, set the <strong>GETOTF<\/strong> flag in the control structure so the output is returned as OTF instead of being printed immediately:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>ls_control_param-getotf = 'X'.<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Adobe Forms:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adobe Forms work differently because they generate PDF output natively through Adobe Document Services. There is no OTF conversion step; call the generated function module and read the PDF directly from the output structure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>CALL FUNCTION lv_fm_name\n  EXPORTING\n    \/1bcdwb\/docparams  = ls_docparams\n  IMPORTING\n    \/1bcdwb\/formoutput = ls_output\nlv_pdf = ls_output-pdf.   \" Already in PDF format<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Convert OTF to PDF <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once OTF data has been captured from SAPscript or Smart Forms, convert it into PDF content using the standard function module <strong>CONVERT_OTF<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>\" Convert OTF format to PDF content\nCALL FUNCTION 'CONVERT_OTF'\n  EXPORTING\n    format       = 'PDF'\n  IMPORTING\n    bin_filesize = lv_binfilesize\n    bin_file     = lv_bin_script\n  TABLES\n    otf          = gt_otf_data   \" Input table with OTF format\n    lines        = gt_pdf_script.<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SmartForms:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Smart Forms, an additional conversion step may be required to move the binary table into an XSTRING buffer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>\" Convert TLINE binary table to XSTRING\nCALL FUNCTION 'SCMS_BINARY_TO_XSTRING'\n  EXPORTING\n    input_length = lv_pdf_size\n  IMPORTING\n    buffer       = lv_pdf_smartform\n  TABLES\n    binary_tab   = lt_lines.<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Add the PDF content to the merge sequence <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the PDF content is available as XSTRING, register it with the merge object using <strong>ADD_DOCUMENT<\/strong>. Each call appends one PDF to the merge sequence in the required order:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>DATA: lo_pdf_merged TYPE REF TO cl_rspo_pdf_merge.\n               lo_pdf_merged->add_document( document = lv_bin_script ).<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Get the external PDF from the application server<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, read the external PDF\u2014for example, an engineering drawing\u2014from the application server in binary mode. Merge the documents<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After all PDF sources are added to the merge object, call <strong>MERGE_DOCUMENTS<\/strong> to generate one combined PDF:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>DATA: lo_pdf_merged TYPE REF TO cl_rspo_pdf_merge.\nlo_pdf_merged->merge_documents(\n  IMPORTING\n    merged_document = DATA(lv_merged_pdf)\n    rc       = DATA(rc_code)).<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>For mass processing, suppress the print dialog so the job can run unattended:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>\" During mass-processing, no popup for print dialog.\n\" !! The printer ZPDF is set as a fixed value;\n\"    for dynamic values, 'dest' must be swapped out !!\nDATA(ls_outputparams) = VALUE sfpoutputparams(\n  nodialog = abap_true\n  dest     = 'ZPDF' ).<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6. Generate the external output as PDF<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, send the merged PDF to a spool job through Adobe Document Services. Start by opening the job and setting immediate printing if required:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>ls_outputparams-reqimm = 'X'.\nCALL FUNCTION 'FP_JOB_OPEN'\n  CHANGING\n    ie_outputparams = ls_outputparams\n  EXCEPTIONS\n    cancel          = 1\n    usage_error     = 2\n    system_error    = 3\n    internal_error  = 4\n    OTHERS          = 5.\nlv_copies   = ls_outputparams-copies.\nlv_lifetime = ls_outputparams-lifetime.<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Then create the spool job from the merged PDF data using <strong>ADS_CREATE_PDF_SPOOLJOB<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>CALL FUNCTION 'ADS_CREATE_PDF_SPOOLJOB'\n  EXPORTING\n    dest            = ls_outputparams-dest\n    pages           = 100\n    pdf_data        = lv_pdf\n    name            = ls_outputparams-dataset\n    suffix1         = ls_outputparams-suffix1\n    suffix2         = ls_outputparams-suffix2\n    copies          = lv_copies_ads\n    immediate_print = ls_outputparams-reqimm\n    auto_delete     = ls_outputparams-reqdel\n    titleline       = ls_outputparams-covtitle\n    receiver        = ls_outputparams-receiver\n    division        = ls_outputparams-division\n    authority       = ls_outputparams-authority\n    lifetime        = lv_lifetime\n  IMPORTING\n    spoolid         = lv_spoolid_ads.<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>After the spool request is created, close the job using <strong>FP_JOB_CLOSE<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This approach is technology-agnostic at the merge layer. Whether the original output comes from SAPscript, Smart Forms, or Adobe Forms, the process becomes consistent once each source is available as PDF XSTRING data. From there, use <strong>ADD_DOCUMENT<\/strong> for each PDF, <strong>MERGE_DOCUMENTS<\/strong> to combine the files, and <strong>ADS_CREATE_PDF_SPOOLJOB<\/strong> or another output channel to deliver the final document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-conclusion\">Conclusion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Merging external PDFs into SAP-generated output doesn&#8217;t require a different strategy for every form of technology, it requires one consistent target format. Once SAPscript and Smart Forms output is converted from OTF to XSTRING, and Adobe Forms output is used as-is (since it&#8217;s already PDF), all three sources speak the same language: PDF byte streams that CL_RSPO_PDF_MERGE can combine through a simple ADD_DOCUMENT \/ MERGE_DOCUMENTS sequence. This gives you a reusable pattern rather than a one-off solution. That is what makes the approach practical to standardize across multiple forms and reuse on future requirements, rather than building a separate merge process for every form type that comes
